Sebastián Maldonado Cano
He is a Master’s student at UNAM’s Graduate Program in Comparative Literature. He holds a BA in Modern Languages and Literatures (English Literature) from UNAM, where he specialized in translation and literary theory, resulting in his thesis ‘’Every busy eerie whig’s a bit of a torytale to tell‘: Orality, Listening, Memory and Irish Identity in James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake’, which received with honours and earned a honorific mention from the Colin White Prize as among the Best Thesis in Modern Literature (English Literature) for 2022.
Sebastián is a translator, researcher, and teaching assistant at the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, UNAM, teaching a course on James Joyce’s Ulysses. He has IELTS certification in English, as well as knowledge of French and Italian. He has published academic articles in the journal Nuevas Poligrafías, UNAM, and has collaborated in research projects such as the PAPIME ‘Contemporary Anglo-Irish Literature of the 20th and 21st centuries’.
He joined PoéticaSonora MX to fulfill his social service from January 2021 to July 2022, in the framework of the PAPIIT project (IG400221) ‘Las representaciones de la voz y sus materialidades: archivos, impresos y sonido’. He has participated in the editorialization of digital pieces, the organisation of listening sessions, and in the internal work of the project. He is currently a volunteer collaborator. He has reviewed, catalogued, and systematised sound archives, organised listening sessions, and researched and written essays on listening sessions and poetic sound practices in Mexico. He was part of the translation team for Ruth Finnegan’s Oral Poetry and is the author of the chapter ‘Structures, materiality and archive: a close reading of Ulises Carrión’s verbal experimentation between the page and the sound recording’ in the volume Oralidades en la era digital: archivos, activaciones, memorias y resonancias, edited as part of the PAPIIT project (IG400221) ‘Las representaciones de la voz y sus materialidades: archivos, impresos y sonido’ coordinated by Susana González Aktories and Mariana Masera.
