Sarmen Almond

Mexican musician and vocal performer. Intermedia artist and certified voice teacher on the Roy Hart tradition. M.A. in Sonic Arts (Queen’s University, Belfast). She is currently an artist-in-residence in the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program (Music & Sound, 2026).

Sarmen uses the human voice in relation to digital and electronic media to create compositions and decompositions of personality on stage. She employs extended vocal techniques, digital programming, and body movement to investigate the infinite possibilities of vocal sound and the human body as an instrument, as well as their resonance within physical and imaginary spaces.

She currently composes and performs multichannel pieces for voice and electronic media, in addition to creating sound environments for theater and engaging in deep practice within the field of free improvisation. She is a member of the downtempo duo Man In Motion.

She has presented her work in Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and Singapore, among other countries. She has held artist residencies at STEIM (Amsterdam, 2008), DAS Digital Art Studios (Belfast, 2011), and NEIRO (Prague, 2024).

She is the founder and director of Alquimia Vocal, a pedagogical platform dedicated to continuing training in the performative use of the voice. Since 2020, she has organized the Encuentro Internacional Alquimia Vocal (Alquimia Vocal International Gathering) in Mexico every November, bringing together educators specializing in vocal work.

She formally joined PoéticaSonora MX in January 2026 as part of the project PAPIIT IG400126, “Oralidad, impresos y sus resonancias ante el desarrollo de las tecnologías sonoras”.  Nevertheless, she has participated in various activities from previous years:

• In conversation with Sarmen Almond: “La voz es un sonido, pero la voz también la entiendo como aquella multiplicidad de sonidos que no emito, todas esas voces que escucho en mi cabeza, que todos oímos dentro” (2022).
• Listening session with Sarmen Almond: ‘Black Holes’ y ‘Longing’
• She participated in the workshop “vocal readings: voice – text – score” taught Ute Wasserman in 2022.
• In 2025, she was part of a listening session, along with Berit Callsen, of sound pieces about water.
• She participated with Poets Orchestra (Chile) in a concert in Casa del Lago.
